Our Clothing: The Hidden Source of Plastic Pollution
It’s time to acknowledge the plastic in our clothing. About 60% of the clothing worn globally is made from plastic-based fabrics like polyester, spandex, nylon, fleece, and more.
When we wash these fabrics, they shed tiny pieces of plastic that are too small to be caught by water filtration systems. This is the #1 source of plastic entering our environment. Because of their small size, these plastics spread easily, including into our food, water and air resources. Not only that, they are very difficult to remove from the environment.
There are SO many options and innovative fabrics that make wonderful alternatives! Take a look in your wardrobe and focus on wearing some natural fiber clothing this week. Look for things like cotton, linen, wool, bamboo, hemp, silk, jute, tencel (wood), modal (beech tree), and many more.
Tip: wear and wash your synthetic clothing less often and when you do wash it, wash it inside of a GUPPYFRIEND washing bag that catches the fibers before they can enter our watershed! Learn More (an exhaustive guide about microfibers): here.
