Inspiration

This project was inspired by Laurel Miranda, Board Chair of CuriOdyssey, through her friendship with Olenka Villarreal, Magical Bridge co-founder.

These two mothers of children with significant disabilities collaborated to launch this partnership and to create a playground that utilizes the latest in universal design principles to serve the entire San Mateo County community.

CuriOdyssey Capital Campaign: Phase One

The playground is the inaugural installation of a new campus plan to create a world-class destination for early science learning in San Mateo County. CuriOdyssey will complete the $2 million playground this fall and will then break ground in 2022 on a new Marina Building which will feature an exhibit gallery, two new learning labs and a sweeping view of the bay. The Marina Building will be the next step in creating a new campus that re-imagines CuriOdyssey for the 21st century.

A Community Partnership

The following five leading organizations serving the Bay Area joined forces to build a playground that is intentionally and mindfully designed to meet the needs of everyone in our community, including the 1-in-4 of us living with visible or invisible disabilities.

CuriOdyssey’s scientific expertise will infuse the playground with design elements to provide an understanding of the physical forces such as angular momentum and gravity that make play possible. Long a much-loved destination for families in the Bay Area, CuriOdyssey is increasingly known as a champion for a way of learning that engages children in science. Educational programs (including public school field trips and free programming for underserved schools and groups) now serve thousands of children annually. Magical Bridge Foundation’s design expertise will create a playground that thoughtfully considers the needs of those of all ages who are living with disabilities.

Sares Regis Group of Northern California, a privately held, Bay Area commercial real estate development, project management, investment, and property management firm, is providing pro-bono project management services to lead the playground project from concept to completion.

Whiting-Turner provides construction management, general contracting, design-build and integrated project delivery services on projects large and small for a diverse group of customers. Its Pleasanton office’s employees and trade partners are volunteering their time and donating materials for the creation of the Whooosh! playground, ensuring that the play area will open in time for fall fun.

San Mateo County Parks' leadership has enthusiastically supported the playground since its inception.
