Saving Humpty Dumpty with Science
One of the most popular children’s nursery rhymes is the tale of Humpty Dumpty. Most of us even know the rhyme by heart that begins, “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall…” And we all know what happens to the protagonist in the end – he breaks and can’t be put back together.
In CuriOdyssey’s Great Egg Drop class, we challenge children to rewrite history and save Humpty! Kids have the opportunity to design a build a contraption that would successfully protect an egg in the event of a “great fall.” Educators challenge participants to try different strategies to protect the egg, like building a parachute, springy landing pads or suspension struts.
This activity is a fun way to experiment with science and learn more about gravity, force and air resistance (and let’s be honest, dropping things off the roof is always a crowd-pleaser!)
Our next Egg Drop workshop will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2014 from 10:15am-12:15pm. If you have a child that is interested in engineering, likes to build, or gets excited by a good challenge, this is the ideal Saturday morning activity for him or her.
