Spotlight on STEMCorps: Meet a Mentor

At CuriOdyssey, we believe that the future of science starts with today’s curious minds. The STEMCorps program is all about harnessing that curiosity and igniting a love of science by connecting passionate mentors with youth from underrepresented communities. By bringing together educators, caregivers, and community partners, STEMCorps aims to break down barriers, empowering young people to explore, learn, and maybe even change the world.

Today, we’re thrilled to introduce one of our fantastic STEMCorps mentors, Marlene Fuentes-Larios, who’s doing just that!

What is your current profession? Tell us a little about what you do.

I am a 7th and 8th grade science teacher. I also advise three clubs on campus. One is the Outdoor Learning Club, where students learn to become watershed stewards, grow their own food, and learn to coexist and preserve wildlife. The next is STEM Fair, where students select a research topic and present their findings to peers. Lastly, I advise Girls Who Code, where students learn about sisterhood, coding, and the impacts they can make on our local community.

Tell us a little about yourself—share a hobby, non-science interest, or a favorite food!

I am a married mother of three girls! I love to read and can’t live without potatoes!

What sparked your love for science?

My father, as he was always passionate about gardening and conducting his own experiments with plants to maximize harvest and learn what soil was most beneficial for our food!

What scientific concept or phenomenon fascinates you the most, and why?

Animal Behavior, because I find it humbling to learn how other species other than humans communicate and the why to their behaviors.

Was there a teacher or mentor who influenced your journey into science? Tell us the story!

My middle school science teachers, Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, were passionate about science. They offered enrichment summer classes and taught us Morse code and circuits! They were so involved, and their passion for education was evident.

Why did you want to become a STEMCorps Member?

I wanted students to see that STEM isn’t so scary. During this mentorship, I also aimed to help students view themselves as capable of making an impact in the STEM community and that their intrigue matters.

Share a memorable moment or highlight of your STEMCorps mentor experience.

I loved seeing the aha moments and the connections my mentee was making. I enjoyed watching their overall appreciation and confidence for STEM disciplines grow.
