Assistant Director, Marketing & Communications
Marketing Department / Permanent - FT - Exempt / Hybrid
ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW
The mission of CuriOdyssey is to inspire a love for science and curiosity about the world in young learners. Located in Coyote Point Park in San Mateo County, CuriOdyssey has undergone a major reinvention and full strategic planning process that has transformed the organization into a vital, kid-centric interactive science center and accredited California native animal wildlife zoo that provides up-close and personal experiences with the natural world. The organization is comprised of a strategic and engaged Board of Trustees, visionary executive leadership, and a talented, energetic and entrepreneurial staff.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, the Assistant Director, Marketing and Communications is responsible for planning and implementing strategies to build museum attendance, revenue, and brand awareness. The Assistant Director will develop advertising and publicity campaigns, promotions, digital marketing campaigns, and other initiatives to promote CuriOdyssey and attract visitors from the mid-Peninsula area as well as the broader Bay Area market.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Working closely with the Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, contract media buyer, and other partners/vendors, develop and execute compelling consumer brand advertising in support of our mission:
- Develop marketing campaigns that support General Admission and Membership sales targets. Set overall goals, timeline, and budget for each campaign, write creative briefs, secure vendors/production partners
- Plan media strategy: provide input on target audiences, media mix, timing, budget allocation, and specific media placements including digital and print ads
- Manage production process and logistics: Gather image and copy assets, manage usage rights, copy review, and art direction review to ensure brand consistency and scientific accuracy. Manage internal approvals and coordination with vendor(s) to produce and deliver on time.
- Analyze results: Monitor the success of marketing plans and promotions by tracking data, analyzing results and sharing insights and modifying as needed
- Oversee digital marketing efforts, implementing in collaboration with Marketing Assistant, Website Manager, and contractors as necessary
- Oversee social media strategy: Manage content calendar, copy and assets to promote CuriOdyssey through our social media platforms. Work with marketing assistant to implement and track results.
- Lead and implement the email marketing strategy for museum visitors, subscribers, and members
- Provide regular updates to curiodyssey.org website content.
- Monitor Google Analytics and report on any trends in traffic and e-commerce. Oversee Google Grants consultant, providing guidance on keywords and campaigns based on organizational priorities and goals.
- Provide marketing and communications support to other departments and cross-departmental initiatives, in support of the organization’s overall mission
- Work with education team to strategically promote programs throughout the year
- Provide marketing recommendations for other programs and teams as needed, including volunteers, facility rentals, and development
- Participate in planning and implementation for high impact, cross-departmental events. As needed, provide staffing support at marketing/promotion events throughout the year.
- Manage daily operations and ongoing strategic initiatives for the marketing department
- Manage expenses: Oversee advertising media and production expenses, including tracking monthly planned vs. actual spending, processing invoices, and reconciling discrepancies as needed
- Create/oversee creation of graphics for social media, digital ads, newsletters, etc. on an ad hoc basis
- Other duties as assigned
SKILLS AND DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Motivation to work in a mission-oriented, nonprofit small museum and zoo
- Strong writing and editing skills with a portfolio of marketing copy that drives proven results across campaign channels
- Ability to manage and apply voice, tone, and style guides and visual templates
- Excellent analytical skills and ability to use data to measure results
- Proficient in Microsoft, Google, and Adobe software suites
- Proactive, strategic thinker and creative problem-solver
- Well organized, detail-oriented and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Responds quickly to time-sensitive queries and successfully conducts business in a fast-paced environment
- Strong interpersonal skills; desire and ability to cultivate and maintain effective relationships with staff, vendors and outside partners. Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
- Able and willing to work occasional early/late/weekend hours as needed
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent experience:
- Minimum five years’ professional experience in marketing or promotions; and undergraduate degree, preferably with coursework in marketing, communications, journalism or related area of study or equivalent work experience
- Experience at a non-profit organization or visitor-serving organization strongly preferred
- Experience in managing a six-figure annual marketing budget
- Experience in email marketing and social media marketing
- Experience with event marketing and SEO/SEM a plus

Environment: Work is primarily conducted at CuriOdyssey, but up to one work day per week may be conducted remotely on a mutually agreeable schedule with the Director of Sales and Marketing.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Pay Rate: $78,000-95,000 annual salary
This is an exempt full-time position with an immediate desired start date. The general work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm with occasional weekend or evening hours (based on events schedule).
