Young children are often brimming with energy, enthusiasm and curiosity, especially when they have a chance to play, hang out with animals and soak up new information in a way that seems less like a chore and more like an adventure.

That’s part of the reason mega-philanthropists Kathryn “Kat” Taylor and husband Tom Steyer, the hedge-fund billionaire and hard-driving environmentalist, are backing plans to dramatically expand and augment a 61-year-old museum in San Mateo County’s Coyote Point Park, 10 miles south of San Francisco International Airport.
