Heard About The King Tide Photo Initiative?

Have you heard about the Bay Area King Tide Photo Initiative? Our local NPR station, KQED, recently reported on it, and the story piqued our interest.

Seasonal high tides, also called King Tides, are prevalent during certain times of the year. The enlightening thing about these seasonal tides is they give us a glimpse of what the San Francisco Bay Area might look like if many scientists’ predictions of rising sea levels come true. In order to capture images of what the Bay Area waterfront could look like in years to come, the Bay Area King Tide Photo Initiative came about.

The organization recently issued a call for photographs of areas that are vulnerable to rising tides. The idea is that compelling photos will aid in promoting awareness of the potential impacts of the rising sea level. Because CuriOdyssey is situated right on the Bay in Coyote Point Recreation Area, we took the opportunity last week during high tide to document some areas along the waterfront.

We love this initiative, and we’d like to encourage you to be a part of this effort, too! Break out your camera and explore the Bay Area’s waterfront – coast or bay – whichever interests you. Not only is it a great way to help document the water, it’s also a great excuse to step out and spend some time in nature. The organization is looking for “before, during and after” shots of the areas. Additional high tides are set to occur again on February 16-18, 2011, so you have plenty of time to plan your exploration.
