CuriOdyssey Retains Top Accreditation

The top accrediting body for zoos and aquariums, The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), has approved CuriOdyssey’s accreditation for an additional five years, signaling the 5th consecutive time the organization has received the certificate (since 2000). Fewer than 10% of the approximately 2,800 animal exhibitors licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture are AZA-accredited. CuriOdyssey is one of six AZA-accredited institutions within the San Francisco Bay Area and the only one located within San Mateo County.

To earn AZA accreditation, zoos must meet rigorous standards in animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, safety and financial solvency, and undergo an extensive review and inspection every five years to remain accredited. Per their website, AZA has been the primary accrediting body for zoos and aquariums for over 40 years. U.S. agencies such as OSHA and the USDA consider AZA standards as the “national” standard, and they refer to AZA standards when evaluating institutions.

“This accreditation is a testament to our work and dedication,” Director of Wildlife Nikii Finch-Morales said. “The standards are higher than they have ever been and we are proud that we continue to maintain our excellence each year to meet these demands.”

A number of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums, including CuriOdyssey, participate in the AZA Reciprocal Admissions Program. This allows our members free or discounted admission into other participating AZA-accredited zoos or aquariums.
