A Gold Award That’s Making Science More Accessible
At CuriOdyssey, we believe science should be hands-on and accessible to every learner. Thanks to Girl Scout Gold Award recipient Tamaryn, that belief is now stitched into our classrooms.
Tamaryn earned the highest award in Girl Scouting for her project, Hands-On Anatomy: Creative Dissection Models for Accessible Science Education. Inspired by her time as a CuriOdyssey summer camp counselor, she noticed that some campers felt overwhelmed during traditional squid dissections, particularly those with sensory sensitivities. Her solution? Fabric-based squid dissection models with removable organs that allow students to explore anatomy in a sensory-friendly way. She also created bilingual English and Spanish instructional guides so educators can confidently implement the activity.
During summer camp, all 112 Ocean Adventures campers were given the option to use the models, and 10 students chose the textile squid, ensuring they could fully participate in the learning experience. Tamaryn’s creativity, empathy, and leadership have left a lasting impact on our programs. Her work reminds us that science education is strongest when everyone has a way in.
Congratulations, Tamaryn, and thank you for helping us make science more inclusive for all.
