Whoosh Physics in Action Playground logo

Designed by Magical Bridge Foundation, the inclusive and innovative playground is the first of its kind to be built by a zoo and museum. Located in CuriOdyssey’s gardens, the playground incorporates universal design principles to ensure fun for all ages and abilities, welcoming everyone, at every stage of life, to play and explore.

Whooosh! opened in November 2021 as part of the first phase of CuriOdyssey's campus expansion.

Inspiration

This project was inspired by Laurel Miranda, Board Chair of CuriOdyssey, through her friendship with Olenka Villarreal, Magical Bridge co-founder.

These two mothers of children with significant disabilities collaborated to launch this partnership and to create a playground that utilizes the latest in universal design principles to serve the entire San Mateo County community.

A Community Partnership

CuriOdyssey is proud to have partnered with the following leading organizations to build a playground that is intentionally and mindfully designed to meet the needs of everyone in our community, including the 1-in-4 of us living with visible or invisible disabilities.

Magical Bridge Foundation’s design expertise created a playground that thoughtfully considers the needs of those of all ages and all abilities for magical multigenerational fun.

Sares Regis Group of Northern California, a privately held, Bay Area commercial real estate development, project management, investment, and property management firm, provided pro-bono project management services to lead the playground project from concept to completion.

Whiting-Turner provides construction management, general contracting, design-build and integrated project delivery services on projects large and small for a diverse group of customers. Its Pleasanton office’s employees and trade partners volunteered their time and donated materials for the creation of the Whooosh! playground.

San Mateo County Parks' leadership has enthusiastically supported the playground since its inception.
