Every Creature Counts
In a damp corner of an oak forest, lived a tiny Newt. She was small but had a big heart for nature.
She spent her days looking for bugs and worms to eat, noticing the sights and smells around her.
Sometimes, Newt felt her life was small and unimportant.
“I’m just a tiny newt,” she sighed. “How can I make a difference in this big, wide world?”
Just then, there was a rustle in the grass. A fox, an owl, and a turtle emerged from behind an oak tree.
“You do make a difference!” said Fox. “Come walk with us, and we’ll show you how.”
Nature for All
Turtle walked slowly next to Newt.
“I know you might feel small and unimportant,” said Turtle. “Sometimes I feel small too. But all of us have a role to play in nature.
“Newt, you keep the soil healthy so plants can grow, and your amazing skin is like a safety alert, letting us know the ponds and streams are safe to swim in.
“You are important.
“And no matter how fast or slow, big or little, feathered, furred, or scaled you are, everyone has the right to live in a clean, healthy home.”
Different is Awesome
The four animals came upon a beautiful meadow. Bees and butterflies were flying about, worms and shrews were digging in the soil, and a gentle breeze cooled the air.
“Look at all the different plants and animals around us!” Newt said with excitement. “It’s so colorful and alive.”
“This is what biodiversity looks like,” said Owl.
“BI-O-DI-VER-SI-TY,” repeated Newt slowly “What does that mean?”
Owl explained, “Biodiversity in nature is like a big, busy neighborhood where everyone supports each other even though they are different—those differences are like superpowers that make neighborhoods stronger and healthier.”
Take a Forest Bath
The four animals paused to rest in a cool redwood forest.
"Did you know," Fox asked, "that redwood forests are another great example of biodiversity?”
"That's right!" said Owl. "All forests are special. They provide shelter and food, keep us cool on warm days, and give us clean air to breathe."
"Guess what else?" Fox said with a grin. "You can take a forest bath!”
Newt looked around for a pond to take a bath, but there was none in sight.
“I don’t mean that kind of bath,” Fox laughed. “Just spending time under the canopy of trees makes you feel calm and peaceful—the same feeling you get when you take a bath.”
“Ah,” said Newt, “that makes sense. Forests are wonderful!”
One Big Family
Newt looked up at the sky, then gazed at everything around her.
“Owl,” she said, “I’m thankful for the plants and animals that share my home. We all do our part so there’s enough food to eat, clean water to swim in, and good soil for plants to grow."
She thought for a moment. “We’re one big family!”
“Yes,” said Owl. “Everything is connected. All living things breathe the same air, drink from the same rivers, and eat fruit from the same trees. Everyone thrives when we care for each other and the wild spaces we share.”
Forest, Streams, and Sparkly Machines
The four animals wandered toward a clearing in the forest. The sun shone down on them. Newt’s eyes grew big.
“What is that sparkly object on top of the building where the forest rangers live?” Newt asked.
“That,” said Fox, “is a solar panel. It turns sunlight into electricity without polluting the air. That means cleaner skies—so plants, animals, and even tiny bugs can keep living here, just like they’re meant to.”
“Cool!” said Newt
“It IS cool,” responded Turtle. “When people choose clean energy like this, it helps protect our homes. It shows they remember how important nature is.”
Nature, Wow!
The four animals climbed to a hilltop overlooking the bay below. The sun was starting to set, casting a warm glow over the sky.
They sat in silence, listening to the sound of the trees sway in the breeze.
“Wow! Look at all the beauty around us,” exclaimed Newt.
Turtle nodded. “Nature is full of so much wonder. Spending time outdoors makes me feel peaceful and part of something bigger.”
“Yes,” Fox agreed. “It makes me feel more connected to each other, knowing that all of us—plants, animals, and this beautiful seashore—are what makes nature so special.”
Newt’s eyes sparkled. “Thank you for reminding me how wild and wonderful our home is—and why we all need to work together to protect it for everyone to enjoy.”

Cada criatura cuenta
En un rincón húmedo de un bosque de robles, vivía una pequeña Tritón. Era pequeña, pero tenía un gran corazón por la naturaleza.
Pasaba sus días buscando insectos y gusanos para comer, observando las vistas y los olores a su alrededor
A veces, Tritón sentía que su vida era pequeña y sin importancia.
“Solo soy una pequeña Tritón”, ella suspiró. “¿Cómo puedo hacer una diferencia en este mundo tan grande?”
En ese momento, se oyó un crujido en la hierba. Un zorro, un búho y una tortuga emergieron detrás de un árbol de roble.
“¡Sí ya haces una diferencia!”, dijo Zorro. “Ven a caminar con nosotros y te enseñaremos cómo”.
Naturaleza para todos
Tortuga caminó lentamente junto a Tritón.
“Sé que te sientes pequeña y sin importancia”, dijo Tortuga. “A veces yo también me siento pequeño. Pero todos tenemos un papel que desempeñar en la naturaleza.
“Tritón, mantienes la tierra sana para que las plantas puedan crecer, y tu increíble piel es como una alerta de seguridad, que nos avisa que los estanques y arroyos son seguros para nadar.
“Eres importante.
“Y no importa cuán rápido o lento, grande o pequeño, emplumado, peludo o escamoso seas, todos tienen derecho a vivir en un hogar limpio y saludable”.
Lo diferente es asombroso
Los cuatro animales llegaron a una hermosa pradera. Abejas y mariposas volaban, gusanos y musarañas excavaban en la tierra, y una suave brisa refrescaba el aire.
"¡Miren todas las plantas y animales diferentes que nos rodean!" dijo Tritón con entusiasmo. "Es tan colorido y lleno de vida".
"Así es la biodiversidad", dijo Búho.
"BIO-DI-VER-SI-DAD", repitió Tritón lentamente. "¿Qué significa eso?"
Búho explicó: "La biodiversidad en la naturaleza es como un vecindario grande y concurrido donde todos se apoyan mutuamente aunque sean diferentes; esas diferencias son como superpoderes que hacen que los vecindarios sean más fuertes y saludables".
Toma un baño de bosque
Los cuatro animales se detuvieron a descansar en un fresco bosque de secuoyas.
"¿Sabías?", preguntó Zorro, "que los bosques de secuoyas son otro gran ejemplo de biodiversidad?".
"¡Así es!", dijo Búho. "Todos los bosques son especiales. Nos dan refugio y alimento, nos mantienen frescos en los días cálidos y nos dan aire limpio para respirar".
"¿Adivina qué más?", dijo Zorro con una sonrisa. "¡Puedes tomar un baño de bosque!".
Tritón buscó un estanque para tomar un baño, pero no había ninguno a la vista.
"No me refiero a ese tipo de baño", rió Zorro. "El solo hecho de pasar tiempo bajo las copas de los árboles te hace sentir tranquilo y en paz, la misma sensación que tienes cuando tomas un baño".
"Ah", dijo Tritón, "eso tiene sentido. ¡Los bosques son maravillosos!"
Una gran familia
Tritón miró al cielo y luego observó todo a su alrededor.
“Búho”, dijo, “estoy agradecida por las plantas y los animales que comparten mi hogar. Todos ponemos de nuestra parte para que haya suficiente comida, agua limpia para nadar, y buena tierra para que crezcan las plantas”.
Pensó un momento. “¡Somos una gran familia!”.
“Sí”, dijo Búho. “Todo está conectado. Todos los seres vivos respiran el mismo aire, beben de los mismos ríos y comen fruta de los mismos árboles. Todos prosperamos cuando nos cuidamos unos a otros y cuidamos los espacios silvestres que compartimos”.
Bosque, arroyos y máquinas brillantes
Los cuatro animales se dirigieron hacia un claro del bosque. El sol los iluminaba. Los ojos de Tritón se hicieron grandes.
"¿Qué es ese objeto brillante arriba del edificio donde viven los guardabosques?", preguntó Tritón.
"Eso", dijo Zorro, "es un panel solar. Convierte la luz solar en electricidad sin contaminar el aire. Eso significa cielos más limpios, para que las plantas, los animales y hasta los pequeños insectos puedan seguir viviendo aquí, tal como están destinados a ser".
"¡Genial!" exclamó Tritón.
"Es muy genial", respondió Tortuga. "Cuando la gente elige energías limpias como esta, ayuda a proteger nuestros hogares. Demuestra que recuerdan lo importante que es la naturaleza".
¡Naturaleza asombrosa!
Los cuatro animales subieron a la cima de una colina con vistas a la bahía. El sol comenzaba a ponerse, proyectando un cálido resplandor sobre el cielo.
Se sentaron en silencio, escuchando el sonido de los árboles meciéndose con la brisa.
"¡Asombroso! Miren toda la belleza que nos rodea", exclamó Tritón.
Tortuga asintió. "La naturaleza está llena de maravillas. Pasar tiempo al aire libre me hace sentir en paz y parte de algo más grande".
"Sí", asintió Zorro. "Me hace sentir más conectado con los demás, saber que todos nosotros —plantas, animales y esta hermosa costa— somos lo que hace que la naturaleza sea tan especial".
Los ojos de Tritón brillaron. "Gracias por recordarme lo silvestre y maravilloso que es nuestro hogar, y por qué todos debemos trabajar juntos para protegerlo y que todos lo disfruten".
