Other words are just&nbsp;example of <strong><em>greenwashing<\/em><\/strong>, designed to confuse consumers into spending more money for a product they believe the sustainable choice, even if this is not the case.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"www.earthday.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/curiodyssey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Canva-Person-Showing-I-Am-Earth-Illustration-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22362\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/curiodyssey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Canva-Person-Showing-I-Am-Earth-Illustration-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/curiodyssey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Canva-Person-Showing-I-Am-Earth-Illustration-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/curiodyssey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Canva-Person-Showing-I-Am-Earth-Illustration-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/curiodyssey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Canva-Person-Showing-I-Am-Earth-Illustration-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/curiodyssey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Canva-Person-Showing-I-Am-Earth-Illustration-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve broken down some common&nbsp;product labels&nbsp;to help&nbsp;empower you to make truly sustainable choices&nbsp;this <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthday.org\" target=\"_blank\">Earth Day<\/a>!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>What is it made of?<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch Out For:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>\u201cEco-friendly,&#8221; \u201cEarth Friendly,\u201d and \u201cGreen:\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>These don\u2019t mean anything specific. Check the packaging for additional details to make sure it is not just greenwashing!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Biodegradable<\/strong>:&nbsp;This doesn\u2019t mean anything specific &#8211; a&nbsp;product which can break down under&nbsp;unspecified&nbsp;conditions in an unspecified amount of time.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for these instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Compostable<\/strong>:&nbsp;Generally&nbsp;means it will break down in about 90 days.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Some products are listed as \u201c<strong>OK for at home composting<\/strong>\u201d and that means that you could compost them in your backyard compost pile.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Most products might say \u201c<strong>Compostable in Industrial Facilities<\/strong>\u201d or \u201c<strong>ASTM D6400 Certified<\/strong>\u201d which means they need high heat and oxygen to compost. Some municipalities have access to this, including curbside compost throughout much of the bay area.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>100% post-consumer material:&nbsp;<\/strong>This was made from recycled or reused materials.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wha<em>t about food? <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Oof. This one gets confusing. Take eggs for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Pasture Raised<\/strong>: Not regulated by the USDA. Does not mean anything specific.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Cage Free:&nbsp;<\/strong>Regulated by the USDA. Hens<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>do not live in cages but how much space they have and whether they are indoors or outdoors is not specified.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for these instead:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Certified Humane:<\/strong>&nbsp;Regulated by private company.&nbsp;Regulates space, air quality, access to perches, access to outdoor space, food, and water.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Free Range<\/strong>: Regulated by USDA. Hens do not live in cages and must have continuous access to the outdoors (can include a screen porch).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Organic<\/strong>:&nbsp;Regulated by USDA. Requires that hens are&nbsp;raised in a way that limits strain on the ecosystem. Does not regulate space provided to hens.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind, most certifications are costly to acquire.
