{"id":12443,"date":"2017-08-30T10:00:24","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T10:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/curiodyssey.org\/?p=12443"},"modified":"2017-08-30T17:41:19","modified_gmt":"2017-08-30T17:41:19","slug":"aza-hurricane-harvey-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/curiodyssey.org\/blog\/aza-hurricane-harvey-updates\/","title":{"rendered":"AZA&#8217;s Hurricane Harvey Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><em>Updated 08\/29\/2017.<\/em><\/h4>\n<h4><em>The Association for Zoos and Aquariums sent out these updates from fellow\u00a0Zoos and Aquariums in regard to Hurricane Harvey in Texas:<\/em><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_12444\" style=\"width: 537px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savingcranes.org\/help-us-re-build-in-rockport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12444\" class=\"wp-image-12444\" src=\"https:\/\/curiodyssey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/InternationalCranceFoundationTexas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"527\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/curiodyssey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/InternationalCranceFoundationTexas.jpg 768w, https:\/\/curiodyssey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/InternationalCranceFoundationTexas-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 527px) 100vw, 527px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12444\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The International Crane Foundation\u2019s Texas fieldwork is based out of Rockport, TX, where the eye of Category 4 Hurricane Harvey made landfall Aug. 26, 2017.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.savingcranes.org\/help-us-re-build-in-rockport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>International Crane Foundation<\/b><\/a>\u2019s Texas Whooping Crane Program office, in Rockport, TX, was destroyed completely. All field staff evacuated safely, and ICF continues to assess the extent of the damage to offices and field equipment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.landrysinc.com\/concepts\/familyDestinations\/downtownaquarium.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Landry\u2019s Houston Aquarium<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0has experienced flooding and is receiving assistance from San Antonio Zoo.\u00a0 A San Antonio Zoo board member has provided a helicopter, and the first loads of supplies and equipment were delivered today.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonzoo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Houston Zoo<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, thankfully, has reported minimal damage from the hurricane, to this point. All animals are safe and under staff care. The zoo is experiencing some flooding, access to the zoo is severely limited due to surrounding flooding, and unfortunately, many zoo employees have lost homes and belongings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moodygardens.com\/\"><b>Moody Gardens Rainforest &amp; Aquarium<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0experienced high tides and lots of rain Monday night and sustained minor damage. All animals are reported safe. Many employees have suffered losses. The facility is compiling a list of employee needs and damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasstateaquarium.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Texas State Aquarium<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0reopened on Monday afternoon and resumed normal hours of operation. All animals are doing well and are under staff care. Although the aquarium\u2019s main campus is without power, all exhibits remain fully operational due to significant on-site emergency power.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The AZA would like to acknowledge the teams at San Antonio Zoo, SeaWorld San Antonio, Fort Worth Zoo, Dallas Zoo, and all those who have stepped up to assist our member facilities and other zoos and aquariums in need. AZA\u2019s ZAHP Fusion Center is assisting on a task force to provide aid with all animal issues at the request of the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The AZA recommends:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Symbol;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If you have or know of ANY unmet needs, are potentially able to help with equipment or service, or have already assisted a facility and have details that should be communicated to the TAHC, please call the TAHC\u2019s Animal Response Operation Coordination Center (AROCC) hotline:\u00a0 (512)-719-0799.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Information, questions, and concerns can also be sent to ZAHP Fusion Center staff:\u00a0 Ashley Zielinski (<\/span><a href=\"mailto:azielinski@aza.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">azielinski@aza.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">) and Steve Olson (<\/span><a href=\"mailto:solson@aza.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">solson@aza.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">).\u00a0 These members of our staff will coordinate to prevent duplication of efforts, wasted resources, etc.\u00a0 This will make sure we get pertinent information to TAHC task force.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One location (ICF) has set up a way to donate on their website, and others have gone online to assure everyone they are okay.
