Virtual S.T.E.A.M. Camp
Daily camp from 9am–noon, Monday–Friday
For Youth Entering Grades 2-6 in the Fall of 2020
An interactive science and engineering program for youth entering grades 2-6 who are experienced with online learning, CuriOdyssey’s Virtual S.T.E.A.M. Camp will more be more than watching a video. Campers will engage in activities designed for a virtual platform, collaborate with our professional educators and other campers, and share their discoveries. CuriOdyssey will provide information to help parents understand the content for each camp and any support they may need to provide, as well as special materials kits for some of the camps. If your child likes to tinker, express their creativity, learn about animals, or is fascinated with the forces that shape our planet, this is the S.T.E.A.M. camp for them!
Junior Keepers: A virtual program for the camper interested in wildlife, conservation, and the animals that call CuriOdyssey home! In this virtual experience, campers will delight in meeting animals, making observations, and forming questions to learn more. We will focus on noticing and connecting with the wildlife near you during some of our favorite backyard biology activities. You will join CuriOdyssey educators on a virtual field trip and chat with local wildlife experts. This camp is sure to be a wild(life) time!
Earth Explorers: Constantly changing, our Earth is altered by water, wind, and the sun. Campers collaborate with CuriOdyssey educators to explore the natural forces that shape our planet and make life on Earth possible. Aspiring geoscientists will shed light on shadows, trap air in bubbles, investigate the properties of water, and dig into our local geology. This camp combines many science disciplines and explores conservation issues to help preserve and restore the systems that keep our Earth healthy and thriving.
Gadgets & Gizmos: Create a roller coaster for marbles, launch rockets, and design and test an egg-safety device! Campers explore sound, find out about flight, and play with forces. This camp is all about physical science, engineering, and trying new ideas. We focus on experimenting, perseverance, discovering how things work and why sometimes they don’t. If your child likes making and tinkering with gadgets and gizmos, this is the camp for them.
Art Inventors: Get crafty with DIY, test your tinkering determination, and get outside with some science fun in Art Inventors. This camp blends the exploration of life and physical sciences. We’ll think like engineers as we experiment to observe and explain the science behind our mixed-media art projects. With wearable, edible, and watchable art, campers will unleash their creativity in expressing newfound discovery about how the world works. The result is a fun, messy experience that is sure to delight!

LIVE Virtual Science Classes
Every Thursday from 1:30 to 2:15
Looking for at home science enrichment? Launch your exploration into science and nature through a CuriOdyssey virtual class. Live with a professional CuriOdyssey educator as your collaborator, explore the stickiness of water, be a wildlife watcher and engage in community science. These classes are real time interactive online experiences designed for students entering grades 2-6 working independently or with parent participation for PreK to grade 1. CuriOdyssey has designed classes that can be effectively delivered through a virtual platform so that you can explore the superpower of science from the safety of your home.
Drinking Water: What do you know about the water you drink? CuriOdyssey educators will have a live discussion with kids about fresh water, water conservation, and water purification. Participants will set up a water distillation experiment, share ideas and create a personalized pledge to use less water, and learn about California’s flagship river species! Your child “otter” join us for this class (hint hint)!
Better Baking Soda & Vinegar: Let's update an old classic and find out new ways to explore baking soda and vinegar. Participants can guide the investigation and conduct their own research in kitchen chemistry. A CuriOdyssey educator will assist young chemists, answer questions, and demonstrate some creative ways to investigate this reaction including making a baking soda and vinegar fountain!
Wildlife Watchers: Learning animal identification begins with great observations! We can use clues such as sights, sounds, and smells to help identify what’s in our backyard. This class will introduce nature note booking, how to create a sound map and walk through identifying a bird with the field marks seen in real life. CuriOdyssey educators will help kids with tips and tricks to develop nature detective skills and introduce a live wild animal or animal ambassador.
Colorful Cabbage Chemistry: Looking for something to do with your kids who are craving science? We have a solution…boil a cabbage! We will show how to use red cabbage to investigate pH in several colorful ways. During this class curious chemists understand and test the pH of solutions, guide a CuriOdyssey educator experimenting with this leafy vegetable and show off their own cabbage chemistry. There is preparation needed prior to the start of this class.
Community Science: Community science is people powered science! In collaboration with CuriOdyssey educators, you will discuss the power of community scientists helping professional scientists while learning about the local environment and having fun! In addition, kids will learn how to use the community science tools iNaturalist and Zooniverse, design and make an “invertebrate hotel” and find out about other community science projects. Once you’ve discovered the important science tool of observation you can become an active part of community science!
Audible Adventures with Cardboard: Calling all musicians and tinkerers! What is sound? How do we experience sound and how does sound travel? These questions form the foundation of our inquiry into the world of sound. Along with CuriOdyssey educators, students will creatively construct cardboard instruments and design their own inventions to study the science of sound! Start your paper tube and milk carton collection ASAP to be ready to join in the fun.
Eggsploration: In our daily lives, we mostly interact with eggs that come from a chicken. In nature eggs come in all different shapes, sizes, textures and colors! In this class we explore the diversity of eggs and better understand their structure and function! In this class kids will see an oviparous animal, predict the strength of an egg and have a discussion with a CuriOdyssey Educator.
Water is Sticky: Find out what we mean by “water is sticky” in this live virtual class. How many drops can fit on a penny? How can two colors of water mix without pouring? Young hydrologists will be able to answer these questions when they join a CuriOdyssey educator to experiment with the different properties of water. Be sure to be in place at home that can get wet and let’s discover how water is sticky.
Pet Play: Animal lovers with or without pets are welcome to join this class. Animal enrichment is about thinking innovatively with simple household materials to maintain a pet’s healthy mind and active body. A CuriOdyssey educator will have examples and partner with you designing and engineering enrichment with cardboard and other household findings for pocket pets, reptiles, cats, dogs, or wild birds. Feel free to invite your well-behaved pet on screen for a brief show and tell. Gather up those paper tubes, boxes, and containers to have on hand to build a pet play enrichment.
Sssecret Lives of Snakes: Can snakes really dislocate their jaws to eat their food? What makes them a reptile? Why do snakes have scales? In this live class, learn the answer to these questions, set up an experiment at home, and get to know a live snake! There will be time for discussion, sharing and discovery of the secret lives of snakes.
