    Animal Eggsploration

    This workshop introduces students to egg-laying animals like insects, amphibians, birds, and reptiles. A test of an egg’s strength with our egg crusher will exemplify just how strong an egg actually is. Students will observe, compare, and interact with live animals that lay eggs and take a closer look at the form and function of chicken egg.

    Animal Ambassadors vary and may include: cockroach, snake, and/or bird.

    Dynamic Decomposers

    Millipedes, worms, and snails – are they pests or pals? Roll up your sleeves and get ready to dig in as we look at the beneficial roles these critters play in our daily lives. Students learn about how some invertebrates aid in decomposition and create soil. Handle earthworms, magnify a snail, and get a closer look at live detritivores.

    Animal Ambassadors vary and may include: earthworms, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, millipedes, and/or snails.

    Fur, Feathers, Scales, or Exoskeletons

    Explore the coverings of mammals, birds, reptiles, and arthropods. Students touch and talk about similarities, differences, and functions of each type of covering, and how they aid in the survival of the animal. This class will include seeing some live animals and handling biofacts to find out about animals covered in fur, feathers, scales, and exoskeletons.

    Ramblin’ Reptiles

    Reptiles have inhabited this planet for 340 million years! This program takes a focused look at some of the Museum’s amazing ectotherms. This class combines live reptile observation and the study of biofacts. Observe the locomotion of a tortoise, patterns of a snake, or the blue tongue of a skink as we study the ancestors of dinosaurs.

    Animal Ambassadors vary and may include: desert tortoise, blue-tongued skink, bearded dragon, and/or snake.

    Have you ever wondered what sound a peregrine falcon makes? Or stuck your nose in a ferret’s fur to find out what it smells like? Use your senses to get to know our Animal Ambassadors in a program specially designed to introduce young learners to animal basics. A highly visual and tactile approach encourages students to use their eyes, ears, noses, and fingertips to learn about the fundamental characteristics that define each animal they meet.

    In nature, eating is just as important as not getting eaten! Explore the adaptations that allow animals to serve in their individual niches by seeing them in action. Students will learn about tooth structure in mammalian herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores, be introduced to a tiny but essential detritivore, and experience a live animal feeding.
